This section covers the most frequently asked questions to guide you and help you to understand our universe.
Further questions will be added on a regular basis.

1. Is the face value of a gold coin relevant?

The face value of a gold coin is the nominal value given to a legal tender. For example a 1oz Gold American Eagle coin has a face value of USD 50, but it will always be traded at the market price of gold according to its purity.

2. What is a legal tender?

A currency in specified denominations that a creditor must by law accept in redemption of a debt.

3. Why is the finesses of the precious metals relevant?

Fineness is the purity of a given precious metal. Precious metals purity, is usually expressed in parts per thousand; thus .995, means 99.5% pure and 999.9 stands for 99.99% purity. The latter is also known as four nine (9999). To refine and attain pure gold, the smelter has to separate the gold from the other metals (copper, silver,...).

4. Do you know that the Swiss Confederation stopped to strike Vreneli gold coins?

The last Swiss Vreneli 20 Fr. gold coins were produced by the Swiss mint in 1949.

5. Why is it important to buy brand new products with an official foundry hallmark?

The producer is responsible and guarantees the weight and the finesses of the product.

6. What is the meaning of the hallmark?

In Switzerland, there are different types of hallmarks that have different meanings. For more information, please refer to Official Web Site

7. What is the Swiss ingot?

A gold bar weighting 1 kilogram approximately 32.151 troy ounces with purity of 999.9 / 1000. This is a standard accepted worldwide for bullion cast bars.

8. What is the reference price of gold?

The London gold fixing is the procedure by which the price of gold is determined twice each business day on the London market by the five members of The London Gold Market Fixing Ltd. It is designed to fix a price for settling contracts between members of the London bullion market, but informally the gold fixing provides a recognized rate that is used as a benchmark for pricing the majority of gold products and derivatives throughout the world's markets. The gold fix is conducted in United States dollars (US$), Pound sterling (GBP), and the euro (€) daily at 10.30am and 3pm, London time.

9. What is the gold standard?

A monetary system based on convertibility into gold; paper money backed and interchangeable with gold.

10. What is a "Good delivery bar"?

Large bars, the ingots that conform to the London Good Delivery and should weigh between 350 and 430 ounces (gold content) of a minimum purity of 99.5%.

11. What is the "Good delivery standard"?

The specification to which a gold bar must conform in order to be acceptable on a certain market or exchange. Good delivery for the London Bullion Market is the internationally accredited good delivery standard.

12. What is LBMA?

The London Bullion Market Association acts as the coordinator for activities conducted on behalf of its members and other participants of the London Bullion Market, and it is the principal point of contact between the market and its regulators. The LBMA sets and promotes quality standards for gold and silver bullion bars. The minimum acceptable fineness of the Good Delivery Bars is 99.5% for gold bars and 99.9% for silver bars. The London bullion market is an over-the-counter market for wholesale trading of gold and silver.

13. What is the etymology of "bullion"?

Metal in the mass, usually coin, bars, or ingots. The word "bullion" reportedly originates from Claude de Bullion (13th October 1569 – 22nd December 1640), a French aristocrat and politician who served as Minister of Finance under Louis XIII from 1632 to 1640. An alternative theory suggests that it comes from the old French word "bouillon", which meant "boiling" and was the term for a mint or melting house.

14. What is the "carat" measure?

Unit of fineness, scaled from 1 to 24, 24 carat gold (or pure gold) has at least 999 parts pure gold per thousand; 18 carat gold has 750 parts pure gold and 250 parts alloy per thousand. For example, 1 oz gold Kruggerand is 22 carat and minted from gold alloy that is 91.67% pure and copper for the remaining 2 carat.

15. Where does the term "Troy ounce" comes from?

A Troy ounce is the standard weight in which gold is quoted in the international market, weighing 31.1035 grams. It is named after the old French city of Troyes, the location of an annual trading fair in medieval times.

16. What is the premium?

The market value of a coin or product less the intrinsic value (actual value of the precious metal within the coin) of the same represents the premium.

17. What is a restrike coin?

A numismatic item produced from original dies at a later date. Example: the Swiss Vreneli 20 Fr. 1935, re-struck in 1947.

18. What are the chemical symbols for precious metals?

Gold is Au, from the Latin word "Aurum" which means shining dawn. Silver is Ag, from the Latin word "Argentum". Platinum is Pt, from the Spanish word "Platina". Palladium is Pd, from the asteroid "Pallas".

19. Is gold a currency?

Gold has been used throughout history as money.

20. What is White gold?

White gold is a pale precious metal alloy of gold usually with platinum or nickel or palladium.

21. What is a gold allocated account?

An account in which a client's metal is individually identified as his/hers, and physically segregated from all the other gold in the vault. The majority of banking metal accounts are unallocated, so the metals are bundled with other ownership in the vault. This storage method is cheaper, but with inherent risk.
